WKL Season begins

Filed under: Welsh League — Tags: — Josh @ 7:03 pm

The first weekend of the WKL season went to plan, in that it immediately offered tight, competitive matches after last seasons procession of uncompetitive routs. Also as expected, Cardiff Uni 1 re-inforced their claim to be favourites with a 7-4 win over Cardiff City Hurricanes. The Uni team’s athleticism was dominant as they forced multiple interceptions and smothered the Hurricanes passing. Ceri Jones and Zoe Gabica both scored twice, but the Hurricanes will clearly need more attacking threats against defences as strong as Uni 1. However the Hurricanes kept it close, and had it not been for the impressive long-shooting of Sarah-Louise Burgess might well have sneaked a result.

In the second game, Cardiff Fury produced an excellent coming from behind victory against Dragons B. Having been 6-2 down, and 7-4 at half-time, they upped their defence in the second half, holding Dragons to just a solitary goal. However, with a few minutes left they still trailed by 8-6, and must have been wondering what might have been. They stuck to their task though, and Chris Gubby’s last-gasp long shot won the match 9-8.

Having already selected their WKL sides, Cardiff City have named their first team squad, which is intended to play as Cardiff City Cyclones in the EKA Cup and the regional championships. While this squad may be amended to take into account form and availability for those tournaments, these players are fixed within their teams for the WKL season. (more…)

Cardiff Dragons select WKL Squads

Dragons are the second club to have put up their squads for the upcoming season. It looks clear that they will have to continue to recruit players in order to complete their fixtures after a significant loss of players from last season.

Cardiff University Freshers Tournament

The 2008 Cardiff Uni Freshers Tournament was a big success, and a big improvement on last years. As well as credit to all the people who helped organise it, this success was also due to Notts, Sheffield and Reading unis for travelling some distance for an early start, and to Birmingham and Bristol for bringing enough players for multiple teams. While the uni teams showed a high standard for so early in the season, with lots of promising freshers, unsurprisingly the overall placings closely corellated with the number of experienced players in the teams.

The final was a very close and competitive match between Dragons and City, with the honours going to the Red side of the city this time, 8-5. Dragons goals came from Jen Smith (3), Josh Cockburn (2), Claire Knowles, Julie Saunders and Steve Fung. City’s goals came from Jason Green (3), Matt Hurford and Pete Christensen.

An excellent social then ensued.

WKL League to go ahead with 7 teams

Cardiff University are not going to enter a 3rd team into the WKL to take the place of Newbridge, so unless a surprising development occurs in the next week, the WKL will consist of 7 teams this season.

An updated schedule should be available on this site soon.

Cardiff City announce WKL squads

Cardiff City today announced their squads for the upcoming WKL season. A highly impressive 32 players are registered, though it does look like (in common with all the Welsh teams) some more recruitment of boys may be needed during the season.

Newbridge withdraw from Welsh League

Filed under: Club News, Welsh League — Tags: , , — Josh @ 7:04 pm

Unfortunately, after a strong start with recruitment, numbers at training sessions have dropped off sufficiently that Newbridge General Dynamics no longer feel able they can commit to the league this season. They intend to focus instead on building up their playing base.

An invitation has been sent out to Cardiff University to see if they would like to enter a 3rd team in place of Newbridge, and they are currently considering the matter. If they don’t the likelihood is that the league will proceed as a 7 team league, with each team having 2 bye weeks when their games against Newbridge were scheduled.
