The first weekend of the WKL season went to plan, in that it immediately offered tight, competitive matches after last seasons procession of uncompetitive routs. Also as expected, Cardiff Uni 1 re-inforced their claim to be favourites with a 7-4 win over Cardiff City Hurricanes. The Uni team’s athleticism was dominant as they forced multiple interceptions and smothered the Hurricanes passing. Ceri Jones and Zoe Gabica both scored twice, but the Hurricanes will clearly need more attacking threats against defences as strong as Uni 1. However the Hurricanes kept it close, and had it not been for the impressive long-shooting of Sarah-Louise Burgess might well have sneaked a result.
In the second game, Cardiff Fury produced an excellent coming from behind victory against Dragons B. Having been 6-2 down, and 7-4 at half-time, they upped their defence in the second half, holding Dragons to just a solitary goal. However, with a few minutes left they still trailed by 8-6, and must have been wondering what might have been. They stuck to their task though, and Chris Gubby’s last-gasp long shot won the match 9-8.
