History

Korfball is a sport of Dutch origin and is one of the world’s only mixed team sports. It contains aspects of basketball, netball and handball, while retaining a unique character of its own. It’s been played in the UK for over 50 years, but it’s development in Wales has been more recent.

1991 Cardiff University Korfball founded by a group of Dutch students. They became one of the most well-established korfball univerity clubs in the UK.

2001 Cardiff University win the BUSA student nationals on home soil.

2003 Cardiff City founded by several ex-student players, with Dave Thomas as president and Terry Matthews as coach. The first club side in Wales.

2003 Re-formation of the EKL, incorporating sides from Wales and the South West of England. Initially with just 4 teams, it quickly expanded to 2 divisions of 8 teams.

2004 Formation of the Welsh Korfball Association

2005 Cardiff City win EKL 1st Division, Cardiff City II win second division.

2005 Wales national squad formed, Terry Matthews as coach.

2005 Wales comes 3rd in Home Nations Championship, England win. 

2005 Steve Jones appointed as Wales Coach

2006 Formation of Cardiff Dragons as an off-shoot of Cardiff City, with Josh Cockburn as chair and Remco Broekhuis as coach. Dragons win EKL 1st Division and Dragons II win second division, with City II as runners up.

2006 Wales are runner’s up in Four Nations tournament, Scotland win.

2006 Wales are 4th in inaugral Commonwealth Championships, England win, with South Africa second.

2007 IKF formally ratifies Wales as an independent national korfball federation.

2007 Cardiff Dragons retain both EKL titles. At the instigation of the South West Korfball Association the EKL is disbanded after 5 successful years, with seperate Welsh and South West leagues replacing it.

2007 Wales win Western Division of the Eurobowl

2008 Wales lose Eurobowl final to Slovakia, Steve Jones steps down as national coach.

2008 Cardiff City Cyclones win inaugural Welsh League

2008 General Dynamics team in Newbridge are formed by Kevin Allen and Stuart Wood

2008 Dave Buckland appointed as Wales Coach
