Cardiff University Beginners Tournament

Posted by Josh on October 21, 2007

After not being held last year, and having been very poorly subscribed the year before, there was a big effort needed to put this tournament back on the student calendar. Although there were some late withdrawals, there were still 16 teams participating, which was great. Bristol and Nottingham universities both brought 2 teams, while Sheffield, Birmingham, Oxford and Reading Unis were also represented. Cardiff Uni themselves  entered 3 teams, and the final 5 places were filled by an Old Boys team, 2 from Cardiff Dragons, 1 from Cardiff City and a Medics team.

With the university sides all featuring a minimum of 4 beginners per team, the top teams inevitably were two sides full of experienced players, the Old Boys winning 11-4 against the Medics in the final. Nottingham were the best placed university side in 4th, and the standard of play from the beginners in all the student sides was very high.

For the Welsh teams, the main satisfaction would have come from about 30 players getting their first competetive games, and the matches were played in an excellent atmosphere.

Cardiff Tournament Success

Posted by Josh on August 12, 2007

Leeds vs Highbury

Thanks to a great deal of hard work and also some good luck with the weather, the annual tournament was a big success, with a full quota of 20 teams entering, and plenty of close matches through the day.

Appropriately enough for the biggest club event staged in Wales, 8 members of the Welsh national squad were on the field for the final, 4 each for Wildcats and the Big Cats. Ultimately the London based Wildcats came out on top with a 10-4 victory in the final. Third place were The Flying Dutchmen who had flown over from the Netherlands to compete.

The Plate competition was won by Croydon who came from 3-1 down to beat Manchester 5-3 in the final, while Lancaster Ligers won the spoon competition.

Proposals for re-structure of British Korfball

Posted by Josh on July 24, 2007

The EKA’s development group which has spent several months examining potential ways to improve the structure of British Korfball has come up with several potential proposals as to how this could happen. These can be found on the EKA website. Given the limitations of the Welsh league, this decision could have significant repercussions for korfball in Wales so comments and contributions are welcome.

Welsh korfball filmed for the BBC

Posted by Josh on July 11, 2007

Updated to include revised transmission date

Mike Bushell from BBC Breakfast came along with his cameraman Simon (who took several blows from flying balls for his pains) to film Cardiff Dragons and Cardiff City yesterday. A friendly game was played between the two clubs and then Mike came on to play and be shown the basic rules.

The programme is due to air as part of one of his sports reports on Saturday 11th August, which run at 7.35, 8.35 and 9.35 am.
